Menopause is the time in a woman’s life when she has stopped menstruating and can no longer get pregnant. Clinically, menopause has begun when 12 months have passed since your last period. Menopause usually occurs between the age of 45 and 58.
Some women may go through menopause early. Causes of early menopause include:
The months and years leading up to menopause are referred to as menopausal transition, also sometimes referred to as perimenopause. Women usually start the transitional period in their mid to late 40s. The transition lasts about four years.
Symptoms of menopausal transition include:
These symptoms are often equated with menopause, but they actually mark the transition to menopause. These symptoms occur due to the fluctuations in estrogen and progesterone levels.
Dr. Dueno can help you manage symptoms caused by the transition to menopause with low-dose birth control pills. These pills help decrease hormonal imbalances, improve the regularity of your periods, and relieve vaginal dryness.
Vaginal moisturizers and lubricants also work to improve vaginal dryness.
You may no longer experience your period and the symptoms related to monthly menstruation, but you may continue to experience hot flashes once you’ve hit menopause. Hot flashes can last up to 14 years. Vaginal dryness may also continue during menopause.
If your menopause symptoms disrupt your quality of life, Dr. Dueno may recommend hormone replacement therapy, which is a synthetic replacement for progesterone and estrogen. These prescription medications are available in pill and patch form.
If hormone replacement therapy is necessary for you, Dr. Dueno will work with you to determine the best treatment and dose.
